Bolles Arts International Grant (via Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater)
2013: somebodies dance theater $1500 (Toward production costs as part of a Fulbright Fellowship in Israel)
2013: somebodies dance theater $1500 (Toward production costs as part of a Fulbright Fellowship in Israel)
Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen are dancers, choreographers, educators, and filmmakers. Together they co-direct somebodies dance theater, an award-winning contemporary modern dance company.
Kyle is honored to represent the United States as a Fulbright Fellow to Israel. Senator J. William Fulbright initiated the Fulbright Scholarship program to promote leadership, learning, and empathy between cultures. Kyle endeavors to study, share, and contribute to the field of contemporary dance to further its function of increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Israel.
In October 2013, Kyle begins a 9-month residency based in Tel Aviv, Israel. The primary thrust of his project is to engage in and explore the creative processes of both established and emerging Israeli choreographers in two ways: 1) experientially, by immersing himself in the philosophies of the body, theories of movement, and creative methods of Israeli choreographers as taught in their classes, and 2) theoretically, by interviewing these contemporary dance choreographers about their methodologies, influences, and intentions when creating dance works. Through his research, he hopes to gain knowledge of the impact of Israeli culture and politics on dance-making. Ultimately, he will synthesize and then disseminate this information in a publicly available blog and through documentary films that feature interviews with Israeli choreographers, footage from their rehearsals and performances that demonstrate the aesthetic distinction of their work, and snapshots of Israeli culture.
Gina will work along side Kyle as production manager, film maker, photographer, editor, and marketing director.
